HOME ORGANIZER: KITCHEN LISTS

IT SEEMS LIKE AGES SINCE I'VE DONE A HOME ORGANIZER POST, AND THIS ONE IS WAAAAAAAAY OVERDUE.

Today, I've got some really handy little Kitchen Lists to add to our Home Organizers. These are reference lists more than anything - the type of thing you only want occasionally, but are super handy when you need them.

1. SEASONAL FRUITS & VEGETABLES:

I try not to get into a rut and buy the same old thing all the time by regularly checking out these seasonal lists. For me, they're just a reminder that there are more options out there than peas/beans/corn/carrots and apples/bananas/oranges!

Now, you can generally tell what fruit and veg are in season by what's on special at the Farmer's Market or Supermarket, but sometimes it's nice to have a list.

All the beautiful Autumn fruits are in season here in Australia, and over the last few weeks I've been making some lovely fruit crumbles and strudels - like pear, fig and vanilla crumble (gorgeous with custard), and a luscious blood plum, orange and almond strudel.

I'm also planning to do a few soups for some easy freezer lunches....maybe an Indian spiced Carrot and Cauliflower.... or a creamy Pea, Parsnip and Mint.... or Dan's favorite Broccoli and Bacon... hmmm food for thought lol :)

As you can see, I love playing around with seasonal produce and trying new flavor combinations!

I also find these lists handy when I'm planning what preserves to make each season - I always forget that cherries and apricots have such a short season, and they make such lovely jam, it's good to remember to get some at the market whilst they're available.

2. FREEZER STORAGE GUIDE:

Now, I must say, I learned a few things putting this guide together! Who knew bacon had such a short frozen shelf life? Or Ice cream for that matter!

I mean, bacon is meat, therefore it lasts for ages in the freezer right? Wrong - only a month! And Ice cream... well... um it's a frozen food, therefore it keeps in the freezer for ages... right? Nope. Only two months! I couldn't believe it!

This list is something I only recently put together specifically for our Home Organizers, and I used a number of sources to try and straighten out what to keep in the freezer and for how long. And, as I should have expected, all the sources said different things. lol.

So, I've been very careful with what I put in and kept storage times a bit on the conservative side (mind you, all those sources agreed about the bacon and ice-cream - unbelievable!).

3. FREEZER INVENTORY:

Our big box freezer is still in storage, but I tell you, this year we WILL be getting it filled and working! Meat has been getting more and more expensive lately, and as we live in the country, I'm keen to get a local steer or lamb butchered and put away.

This inventory will be perfect for keeping track of all that meat, but it would also be great if you're a fan of OAMC style cooking, or you just have a big freezer you like to keep nice and full.

I like keeping mine filled with soups, sausage rolls, stewed fruits, and various other things for a quick meal, but occasionally I find some mysterious package lurking in a corner... of unknown origin... unknown contents... and unknown quality!

So, when I get the big freezer up and running, this printable should hopefully help keep it organized and stop food from spoiling!
